Who operates .zuerich?

.zuerich is a so-called geographic top-level domain. The registry is the canton of Zurich itself, managed by the Office for Economy of the Department for Economic Affairs. The canton decides who receives a .zuerich domain and reviews every registration. The extension is sold exclusively through accredited registrars and their resellers.

Who may register a .zuerich domain?

  • Companies and organisations entered in the commercial register of the canton of Zurich, whose UID number is visible there, with an administrative office and active business in the canton.
  • Public-law bodies and public-law organisations based in the canton of Zurich, such as municipalities or cantonal offices.
  • Associations, specialist bodies and similar organisations without a commercial register entry, if they work mainly and on a long-term basis for a Zurich public-law organisation and present its confirmation.

Natural persons cannot acquire a .zuerich domain. Companies that operate in Zurich but are entered in another canton's commercial register are not eligible either. An ordinary association without a commercial register entry only meets the requirements if it works on behalf of a public-law organisation.

What else applies

  • You can only register for your own company. Registrations through representatives or on behalf of third parties are not allowed.
  • Holder details must be complete and correct; proxy or privacy services that hide the real holder are not permitted.
  • You need a physical address in the canton of Zurich, a valid phone number and a contact person.
  • The requirements must remain fulfilled throughout the entire term. The domain may not be transferred or made available to third parties who do not meet them.

Characters, reserved and blocked names

A name under .zuerich may be 1 to 63 characters long and consist of the letters A to Z, the umlauts ä, ö and ü, digits and hyphens. This makes very short names possible that are not allowed under .ch. The canton has reserved certain names; they are only allocated through a separate allocation procedure with an additional cantonal fee. Names that offend public decency are excluded, as are names of international organisations protected by ICANN.

Review and duration

To protect the Zurich brand, the canton reviews every registration request. According to the canton, this usually takes a few working days. Have your UID number ready and enter the company name exactly as it appears in the commercial register. This speeds up the review.

Price, term and transfer

At HostOn, a .zuerich domain costs CHF 89.90 per year, including every renewal; a transfer costs CHF 89.90. According to the canton's policy, a .zuerich domain can be registered for one to ten years. If the domain changes registrar, the holder and requirements stay the same; if you transfer it to another company, that company must also be eligible. Disputes over a name are handled by the usual procedures for generic extensions, such as UDRP and URS.

Typical uses

  • Zurich SMEs, restaurants and trades businesses that want to show their local roots, for example bakery-example.zuerich.
  • Municipalities and cantonal offices for projects, campaigns and events.
  • Short, catchy addresses for marketing and advertising when the name is already taken under .ch.

Who is .zuerich a good fit for?

For companies whose customers are mainly in the city and canton of Zurich and for whom the local connection is a selling point. Because the extension is only open to Zurich companies, it signals genuine origin. As a sole address, however, .zuerich is too specific for most companies: keep your .ch domain as the main address and use .zuerich in addition, for example for local campaigns. Without an entry in the Zurich commercial register, .ch or .swiss are the alternatives.
