Renew a domain

Renew your domain in good time

Domains at HostOn are renewed as soon as the invoice has been paid. Here you can see the prices per extension and what happens if an expiry date is missed.

How to renew your domain

Everything is done in the client area at my.hoston.ch. You don't need to write to us.

  • Pay the invoice

You receive the renewal invoice by email before the expiry date. As soon as it has been paid, we renew the domain with the registry automatically.

  • In the client area

Under ‘Domains’, select the domain and choose ‘Renew’. The invoice is created immediately and you can pay it straight away.

  • Automatic renewal

In the domain details, leave automatic renewal switched on, or switch it off if you no longer need a domain.

Is the domain still with another provider? Then transfer it to us first. Go to domain transfer

Process

What happens when a domain expires

Each registry sets its own deadlines and fees after expiry. The general process, however, is similar everywhere:

Don't wait until the last day. Payment and processing at the registry take some time – it is better to renew a few days before expiry.

  1. Before expiry

    Invoice and reminder by email

The invoice and reminders are sent to the email address of your client account. Keep this address up to date.

  2. On the expiry date

Website and email may stop working

If the domain has not been renewed, the website and mailboxes under this domain may no longer be reachable – even if the hosting has been paid.

  3. After expiry

    Restoration depending on the extension

The domain can usually still be recovered within a limited period. Depending on the registry, a restoration fee may apply.

  4. After that

    The domain is released

Without restoration, the registry deletes the domain. After that, anyone can register it again.

At any time, as long as the domain is active. The paid term is added to the existing expiry date, so you don't lose any days.

For some extensions, the registry offers a promotional price for the first year. From the second year on, the regular price applies. That is why we always show both prices.

Yes, provided automatic renewal is switched on and the renewal invoice is paid on time. We do not renew the domain without payment.

The website and email addresses under the domain may stop working, even if the hosting continues. So renew a few days before the expiry date.

No, it must first be transferred to HostOn. For .ch and .li, the transfer is free of charge and the term stays the same; for generic extensions such as .com, the transfer usually extends the term by one year.
