Who can register a .at domain?

The .at extension is managed by nic.at GmbH in Salzburg. In principle, any person and any organisation can register it, regardless of residence or registered office. You do not need an address or contact person in Austria. Natural persons must be of age and have legal capacity. Companies give their full name with legal form, for example «Muster AG». For an organisation without its own legal personality, such as a simple partnership, a natural person is also recorded and becomes the domain holder.

Holder data and NISG 2026

Austria implements the European NIS 2 Directive through the NISG 2026, in force since 1 October 2026. Domain holders must therefore cooperate when nic.at checks that their data is correct. Holders who do not respond risk the «serverHold» status: the domain is removed from the DNS and stops working technically for up to 30 days, after which deletion may follow. In the public domain lookup, nic.at publishes the data of companies and organisations with their own legal personality, but not that of private individuals.

Holder data for .at uses an ASCII character set. Write names and addresses without umlauts, for example «Zuerich» instead of «Zürich».

Rules for the domain name

  • Length: 1 to 63 characters before .at.
  • Allowed: the letters a–z, the digits 0–9 and the hyphen.
  • The hyphen may not be at the start or end, nor at both the third and fourth position.
  • 34 special characters such as ä, ö and ü are allowed as IDN. Technically, österreich.at becomes xn--sterreich-z7a.at.

Besides .at, there are the sub-extensions .co.at for companies and .or.at for organisations. They follow the same rules and are also available through the domain search. Most companies today go straight for the shorter .at address.

Price, renewal and transfer

At HostOn a .at domain costs CHF 14.90 in the first year and then CHF 26.90 per year. Both prices are shown side by side so you can plan costs over several years: for three years, count CHF 14.90 plus twice CHF 26.90. Automatic renewal is on and can be switched off in the client area.

Transferring a .at domain to HostOn is free. The transfer does not buy any extra term; you only pay the next renewal. You need the auth code (transfer code) from your current provider and enter it when ordering on my.hoston.ch. Your website and e-mail stay online as long as you do not change the name servers.

Disputes over a .at domain

There is no out-of-court dispute resolution for .at as there is for .ch or .com. Anyone claiming rights to a name has to go to court. During the proceedings, a waiting status can be requested from nic.at. It prevents the domain from being transferred to someone else in the meantime. So before registering, check whether the name is protected in Austria as a trademark or company name.

Who is a .at domain suitable for?

  • Swiss companies with customers, a branch or sales partners in Austria.
  • Online shops that deliver to Austria and show a dedicated country page with matching prices and shipping information.
  • Tourism and event offers in the border region, for example around Lake Constance or in the Rhine valley.
  • Brands that want to fully secure their name in the German-speaking region, together with .ch and .de.

For the Swiss market, .ch remains the first choice. A common model: the main website runs on .ch, and the .at domain points to an Austrian country page or redirects to the matching language version.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about this service.

No. People and companies from any country can register .at domains. A contact person in Austria is not required.

Nothing. The transfer is free and the term continues unchanged. You only pay the next renewal at CHF 26.90 per year.

Since the NISG 2026, nic.at can put the domain on «serverHold». It is then removed from the DNS and your website and e-mail stop working. Deletion may follow after up to 30 days.

Yes, 34 special characters such as ä, ö and ü are allowed in the domain name. In the holder data, however, nic.at requires an ASCII character set, so no umlauts.

.co.at is intended for companies and .or.at for organisations. The rules are the same as for .at. Most companies choose the shorter .at domain.
