Is your .info domain still available?
The .info domain at a glance
.info was introduced in 2001 and was the first unrestricted generic extension since .com. It is operated by Identity Digital, the former registry operator Afilias. Registration, expiry and transfer follow ICANN rules, as with .com, .net and .org.
Who can register a .info?
Any individual, company or organisation, regardless of residence or registered office. There are no content requirements: the website does not have to be purely informational. As with all ICANN extensions, the holder data must be accurate, and the e-mail address is confirmed via a link after registration.
Rules for the domain name
- Up to 63 characters before the dot, made of letters, digits and hyphens; no hyphens at the beginning or end.
- According to Identity Digital, internationalised domain names (IDN) are supported for German, French and Spanish among others, so umlauts are possible.
- Term of 1 to 10 years.
Typical uses
- Information pages on a product, a service or a construction project alongside the main website.
- Events, trade fairs and anniversaries with their own memorable address, e.g. music-club-anniversary.info.
- Guides, knowledge pages, help and FAQ sections.
- Tourist and local information, municipal or neighbourhood projects.
- Campaigns and referendum pages with a limited lifetime.
How much does a .info cost?
At HostOn you pay CHF 10.90 for the first year. From the second year the renewal price of CHF 26.90 per year applies. The difference is relatively large for .info – so plan with the renewal price if the site is to run for more than a year. For a campaign page that is no longer needed after the event, simply switch off automatic renewal in the client area.
Expiry and transfer
If the .info is not renewed, the website and e-mail are no longer reachable. After deletion the domain can still be restored for 30 days for an additional fee. To transfer to HostOn you need the auth code from your current provider. The transfer costs CHF 26.90, extends the term by one year and takes up to 5 days. A change is currently not possible in the first 60 days after registration or transfer; ICANN is shortening this period to 30 days.
Alternatives to .info
For the main website of a Swiss company, a .ch is usually the better choice. For projects and sub-pages you can use a subdomain instead of a separate domain, e.g. project.your-company.ch – at no extra cost. A separate .info is worthwhile if the address appears on posters, flyers or the radio and needs to stay short.
Who is .info suitable for?
For municipalities, associations, event organisers, publishers, advice centres and companies that run a stand-alone information site on a topic. It is less suitable as the only address for an online shop.
Before letting a campaign .info expire, redirect it to your main website with a web redirect until links and printed material are out of circulation.
