The .com domain at a glance
.com is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). The registry is Verisign; the rules for registration, expiry and transfer are set by ICANN. Originally intended for commercial sites, .com is now the default extension for internationally oriented websites. Many people type it automatically when they have only heard an address.
Who can register a .com domain?
Any individual or legal entity, with no residence or registered-office requirement. You need neither a commercial register entry nor an address in a particular country. The holder data (name or company, address, e-mail address, phone number) must be accurate. After registration you receive an e-mail asking you to confirm your contact details. If you do not confirm them, the domain can be suspended under ICANN rules – so check your spam folder too.
Rules for the domain name
- Up to 63 characters before the dot: letters a–z, digits 0–9 and hyphens.
- A hyphen may not appear at the beginning or the end.
- Umlauts and accents are possible as an internationalised domain name (IDN), e.g. müller-bau.com. Technically this becomes a Punycode address (xn--…). For e-mail addresses we still recommend the spelling without umlauts.
- Term of 1 to 10 years, renewed in whole years.
Prices, renewal and expiry
A .com costs CHF 9.90 for the first year and CHF 19.90 per year from the second year. We always show the renewal price as well, so you can estimate the cost over several years. Automatic renewal is active and can be switched off in the client area.
When a .com expires, the website and e-mail stop working. After deletion there is a redemption grace period of 30 days during which the domain can be restored for an additional fee. After that it becomes available again and anyone can register it.
Transferring a .com domain to HostOn
For the transfer you need the auth code from your current provider. The transfer costs CHF 19.90 and extends the domain by one year – the remaining paid term is kept. Because the current provider has to release the transfer, it can take up to 5 days. After a registration or a transfer, .com currently has a 60-day lock; ICANN is shortening it to 30 days.
Alternatives to .com
- .ch – if your customers are mainly in Switzerland. Cheaper and familiar locally.
- .net – if your preferred name is taken as .com, especially for IT and tech services.
- .swiss – for companies with a UID and registered office in Switzerland that want to highlight their origin.
- .eu – only with an establishment or citizenship in the EU or EEA, so not for Swiss companies without an EU branch.
Who is .com suitable for?
For Swiss SMEs with customers abroad, export companies, startups, apps and online services with an English website. Even businesses that work mainly with .ch often secure the .com of their company name so that nobody else uses it.
Tip: Register .ch and .com together and point the .com to your main address with a web redirect. DNS management, redirects and DNSSEC are included with every domain.
